Corporate Wellness Training
Study after study has shown it, and it appears the results are sinking in: Corporate wellness training does much more than improve employee health and morale – it leads to increased productivity, decreased health care costs, and a more attractive bottom line.
A 2008 study by Highmark Inc. showed that employers can save $1.65 in health care expenses for every dollar spent on a comprehensive employee wellness program. The Pittsburgh-based health insurer conducted a study of its own corporate wellness program, and found a return on investment (ROI) of $1.3 million during a 4-year period.
And that estimate of wellness programs ROI is actually conservative: Other studies have pegged wellness program ROI anywhere from $1.40 to $13 in savings per dollar spent on these programs.
The Highmark wellness program study found that reduced inpatient costs yielded the highest wellness program ROI, partially due to increased use of screenings and medications among employees.
“There is a common misconception that these studies represent people who are already healthy and motivated. It’s simply not the case,” said Brian Day, director of advanced analytics at Highmark. “One of the most significant findings showed that those involved in wellness activities were not healthier at the start of the program.”
Corporate Wellness Services
Employee wellness program ideas often include:
- Smoking cessation programs
- Health risk assessment,
- Stress reduction programs,
- Disease screening,
- Exercise/fitness facilities/programs,
- High risk intervention programs, and/or
- Nutrition education.
Corporate Wellness Incentives
The InfiniteHealthCoach.com website suggests that corporate wellness incentive plans are a great way to get employees started in a corporate health and wellness program. But the company recommends against using cash or cash equivalents (i.e., gift certificates) in corporate wellness training unless you clearly understand the tax implications of doing so. Some examples of non-taxable items you could use in corporate wellness incentive plans include water bottles, mugs, pens, pencils, key chains, wrist bands, note pads, refrigerator magnets, hats, visors, T-shirts, sports bags, complimentary pass to a fitness center, and the like. It is best to keep incentives simple.
And corporate wellness training doesn’t have to include only tangible wellness program incentives. Participation certificates, special recognition from management, or articles in the employee newsletter are great ways to support your employees and inform co-workers of their success.
The jury is in, and the evidence shows that wellness programs at work are successful on many levels.
