Emergency Action and Fire Prevention

Course Description:

Workplace emergencies are responsible for killing hundreds of workers and injuring thousands more every year in part because workers aren’t trained to recognize the hazards that lead to emergencies and the measures that can be taken to prevent them. This course informs employees how to prevent fires and respond safely to other emergencies in the workplace, as well as the steps to take if an emergency does occur.

Why “Emergency Action and Fire Prevention” Matters:

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that approximately 200 workplace deaths and 5,000 workplace injuries each year are due to fire, one of the most common types of emergencies.

In one recent year, OSHA issued more than 300 citations for violations of its rule on Emergency Action Plans.

Safety experts all agree that knowing how to act quickly and properly in an emergency is the key to saving lives and preventing injuries.

• Fires, chemical discharges, natural disasters, and workplace
  violence are leading causes of workplace emergencies.
• Measures to prevent emergencies are much easier and safer to
  implement than emergency response.
• The first thing to do in the event of an emergency is to remove
  yourself from danger and alert others to the hazard.
• Use firefighting equipment only if trained.
• Know your role in an evacuation. If you have any questions or
  concerns, ask your supervisor.
