Earthquake Preparedness

Course Description:

The main objective of this session is to encourage you to think about earthquake hazards and what you need to do to prepare for and survive earthquakes. By the time the session is over, you will be able to identify earthquake hazards; prepare for quakes at home and at work; know what to do during a quake to help ensure safety; provide assistance to those in need following an earthquake; and take effective steps after a quake to speed recovery.

Why “Earthquake Preparedness” Matters:

Compared to some other natural disasters, serious earthquakes are relatively rare; however, you should be prepared, just in case. Earthquakes are a powerful natural force that can have a major impact on our lives. For example, earthquakes can damage businesses as well as affect jobs, services, and the incomes of employees. They can cause fires, explosions, chemical releases, release of radiation, and other catastrophic events. Earthquakes can cause injuries and deaths. Earthquakes can damage roads and bridges, making them impassable. Quakes can also affect utilities, causing power outages, disruptions of gas lines, and impacting water and sewer services as well.
